Tragedy struck in Rivers State this week when five young workers were electrocuted while erecting a metal billboard for a local church. The heartbreaking incident occurred in Rumuosi community of Obio/Akpor LGA where the workers tried mounting the church signage near live power lines.
Authorities swiftly responded by sealing the premises and arresting an assistant pastor on Monday. The Rivers State Signage and Advertising Agency (RSSAA) barricaded the unidentified church, pending an ongoing investigation. Police also detained a cleric for questioning about the workplace safety failure that led to five deaths.
According to RSSAA head Tony Okeha, the church flouted regulations by erecting the billboard without government approval or safety precautions. The agency regulates signage locations to prevent accidents like this. Okeha warned all organizations to follow proper procedures and obtain authorizations.
Meanwhile, four other workers who injured in the tragic electrical accident remain hospitalized. Police PRO Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed the pastor's arrest, noting the investigation is ongoing.
The heartbreaking loss of five young lives has rocked Rumuosi. As the church faces scrutiny while justice is sought, the community mourns the promising youths. Their deaths spotlight the importance of workplace safety and highlight how critical it is to exercise caution around live power lines.
Authorities sent a clear message by sealing the church and detaining its pastor - violations of safety protocols will not be tolerated. All organizations must safeguard their workers and community members from such preventable tragedies.
