Retired Military Officers Reject Calls for Coup in Nigeria, Affirm Democracy_Director_Defence_Information_Brig._Gen
Retired Nigerian military personnel have warned against calls for the armed forces to seize power, affirming that democracy remains the best system for the country despite current challenges.

Several retired officers spoke out after the Defense Headquarters condemned online commentary urging military intervention to resolve economic and security issues. The military reiterated its commitment to democracy, calling coup rhetoric "wicked and unpatriotic."

Former officers agreed, arguing the military should ignore coup calls and focus on supporting democracy. "The military's loyalty is to the nation, not the president," said retired Maj. Gen. Ishola Williams, who urged intelligence agencies to identify and deter coup plotters.

Retired Col. Foluso Saka warned that coup calls could embolden the military as happened previously when generals Abacha and Babangida toppled elected governments after public discontent.

Other retired officers noted that coups have failed to resolve Nigeria's problems in the past. "Military rule in today's world is an abomination. It would take us backwards,” said Col. Hassan Stan-Labo.

The former officers affirmed that despite current hardships, democracy offers the best path forward. Consistent institution-building and reforms are needed to strengthen Nigeria's democracy, not another military intervention.

Their stance reinforces the military's position - that despite difficulties, Nigeria's future lies with democracy. Calls for unconstitutional change only undermine this process.
