27 Rivers legislators defect to APC

A seismic shift of legislative allegiances slides 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The high-profile defections of these lawmakers, said to be staunch loyalists of former Governor Nyesom Wike, occured during Monday's plenary session in the state capital of Port Harcourt.

Wike, now serving as Nigeria's Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, is reportedly on the verge of making his own switch to the APC camp. The dramatic reversals come after years of acrimonious rivalry at both state and national levels.

Only 4 of the 32-member legislature remain aligned with current Governor Siminialayi Fubara of the PDP. In response, Fubara has swiftly called an emergency meeting of the state executive council to discuss implications for governance amid the fracas.
