A chieftain of Nigeria's main opposition party PDP, Daniel Bwala, has spoken out against President Bola Tinubu's direct intervention in the Rivers State political crisis between Governor Nyesom Wike and Governor Sim Fubara.
Bwala contends that Tinubu cannot simultaneously act as "headmaster" overseeing affairs at both the federal and state levels, calling the peace deal brokered at the Presidential Villa "legally absurd."
The dispute stemmed from a heated battle for control over Rivers' political and financial structures. The rift saw state lawmakers defect to Tinubu's APC party and commissioners resign from Fubara's government.
In bridging the divide, Tinubu issued 8 binding resolutions, including withdrawing litigation against the governor and reinstating the legislature's autonomy.
Responding on social media, Bwala criticizes and argues that no president can dictate internal matters of an opposition party or state government. He worries this overreach sets dangerous precedent for Nigeria's democracy, forcing single-party dominance.
The PDP chieftain called on opposition groups to vigorously challenge such heavy-handed interference that appears to undermine constitutional authority. Bwala suggests that politicians are bowing down when they should be pushing back against partisan intrusion from Abuja.
