In a further sign of mounting political turmoil, Rivers State's Commissioner for Environment, Austin Ben-Chioma, has resigned from the administration of Governor Siminialayi Fubara.
Ben-Chioma becomes the ninth cabinet member to quit Fubara's government amid intense power struggles following recent seismic defections of state lawmakers to the rival APC party. Others are:
Prof. Zachaus Andango - Attorney General/Commissioner for Justice
Prof. Chinedu Mmom - Education
Barr. Isaac Kamalu - Finance
Alabo Dax George Kelly - Works
Engr. Chukwuemeka Woke - Special Projects
Mrs. Inime Chinwenwo Aguma - Social Welfare & Rehabilitation
Dr. Kenneth Chisom Gbali - Youth Development
Prof. Henry Ogiri - Power
Engr. Charles Amadi - Chieftaincy & Community Affairs
Dr. Roseline Adawari Uranta - Women Affairs
Chris T. Green, Esq. - Sports
Dr. Jacobson Nbina - Transport
Mr. Uchechukwu Nwafor - Energy & Natural Resources
Dr. Adaeze Chidinma Oreh - Health
Dr. George Nweke - Head of Service.
His departure deals a heavy blow to Governor Fubara as he scrambles to steady his crumbling base in the oil-rich Niger Delta state. Just this week, 27 members of the state legislature abandoned the PDP to join forces with charismatic former Governor Nyesom Wike, now serving as Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory under the APC banner.
The spate of resignations has sparked fears that Fubara may lack sufficient allies to effectively govern the restive region. With the APC surging in legislative ranks and credibility, the struggling Governor is said to be weighing all options to salvage his endangered administration.
Citizens meanwhile hope the maneuverings will give way to unified governance that finally progresses solutions to urgent security threats, environmental degradation and socioeconomic challenges still plaguing local communities.
