The Rivers State House of Assembly has withdrawn impeachment proceedings against Governor Sim Fubara. Speaker Martin Amaewhule announced the decision during plenary on Wednesday.
The lawmakers originally signed an impeachment notice against Fubara amid rising tensions between the governor and Nyesom Wike, his predecessor and Minister of the FCT. This led to defections of Wike loyalists from PDP to APC and countermoves to vacate their seats.
However, after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu earlier this week, resolutions were reached to deescalate the crisis, including withdrawing legal matters and reinstating the defected lawmakers. The lawmakers have now acted on the resolution by repealing Fubara's impeachment.
The withdrawal marks a major step toward resolving the political infighting plaguing Rivers state. Further efforts will likely focus on reconciliation between Fubara and Wike factions as well as stabilizing the state legislature.
The truce brings relief after months of uncertainty over the governorship, though lasting peace will depend on continued good faith efforts on both sides. For now, the repeal has averted a constitutional crisis and paved way for the state government to refocus on serving Rivers people.
