During a peace meeting between Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara and his predecessor Nyesom Wike, President Bola Tinubu strongly criticized Fubara for demolishing the state House of Assembly complex.
Two sources present said Tinubu was "very angry" with the governor, calling it a "desecration of democracy" to raze the "symbol of democracy."
Tinubu referenced his own fights for democracy and how as Lagos governor, he respected the state assembly even when they opposed him.
The demolition occurred while only 4 pro-Fubara lawmakers were present to receive his budget, after 25 pro-Wike lawmakers defected from PDP to APC.
Though the government claimed safety concerns, some believe it aimed to block the 25 lawmakers from sitting.
Sources also mentioned that Tinubu hinted at his past intervention to block Ambode's re-election in Lagos instead of impeaching him, suggesting Wike should avoid extra-legal means in Rivers.
The president told both sides to act lawfully and give Fubara another chance, though Wike likely has the votes to remove him.
The peace deal restores the 25 lawmakers, reappoints officials who resigned, and has Fubara re-present his signed budget to the full Assembly.
