Ukraine Deputy Detonates Grenades During Televised Council Meeting, Killing 1 and Wounding 26

Ukraine Deputy Detonates Grenades in Council Meeting, captured on video with 1 dead, 26 injured

A deeply disturbing scene erupted on live video during a routine village council session in Ukraine on Friday morning, when a deputy produced and activated several grenades, triggering multiple explosions that left 1 dead and 26 people seriously injured.

Graphic footage released shows someone suspected to be a parliament member Serhiy Batryn entering in black attire while a contentious debate was already underway at the Keretsky council building. Batryn proceeds to remove three hand grenades from his jacket, pulling the pins before dropping them in the packed conference room.

The subsequent deafening blasts rip through the space as officials dive for cover with terrified screams. Billowing smoke fills the room, with victims spotted unconscious and bleeding on the floor afterwards.

Authorities confirm Batryn perished in the attack, while 26 people sustained critical wounds, including six whose lives remain in jeopardy as doctors urgently work to resuscitate them.

Identified as a deputy with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s own Servant of the People party, Batryn had lingered briefly by the entrance before swiftly producing and activating the explosives about 1.5 hours into the televised meeting.

A woman witnessing the broadcast immediately contacted emergency services upon seeing the shocking events unfold. Ukraine’s security officials have opened a terrorism investigation, as police probe illegal weapons stockpiling.

The deputy's attack on a civic forum points to emerging threats to public servants striving to uphold local governance — even while weathering armed conflict raging nationwide.

Investigators aim to swiftly establish motives and any wider plots to prevent future attempts at disrupting community administration through acts of mass violence.
