Human rights advocate and lawyer Dele Farotimi regained his freedom on Tuesday morning after meeting bail conditions set by a Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti.
The court earlier set his bail at ₦30 million, prohibited him from granting media interviews regarding the case, and required two sureties, one of whom must be a property owner within the jurisdiction.
Farotimi addressed the media after his release, stating that he had never lied against anyone and still stood by the truth of his statements about individuals and institutions in his book.
Farotimi, who faces a 14-count defamation charge for statements in his book Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, pleaded not guilty. The police alleged that he defamed a Senior Advocate of Nigeria Afe Babalola pictured on the right, accusing him and other SANs of corrupting Supreme Court Justices.
Farotimi is also battling another 12 cybercrime-related charges filed by the Inspector-General of Police at the Federal High Court in Ekiti. He was earlier granted bail of ₦50 million with a surety.
Farotimi still maintains his innocence, emphasizing his commitment to the truth in his advocacy. After his release, he reaffirmed that he has "never lied against anyone" and believes truth is the key to meaningful change in Nigeria. His arrest followed a December 3 raid on his Lagos office by police linked to the Ekiti State Command.
